My friend Billy is missing his friend Chuck. I gave him a long hug at church. Chuck was synonymous with Nashville Sports. He was a celebrity. Billy hung in his shadows, but he was a faithful friend, and he was never jealous of Chuck Ross’ fame.
Billy was a loyal friend to Chuck till the very end, and you hardly ever saw one without the other at church or Lipscomb basketball games. Their smiling faces greeted everyone, and their hellos drew you in as if you were part of their friendship, and you were.
When I saw Billy tonight our bond was stronger because we lost our little buddy, and we’ll never get to rub the Bison again, but as we hugged we both expressed faith that we will see him again. We’ll see him again without his wheelchair, and his vertical leap will be better than Darren Henrie.
As we approach Chuck’s memorial service at Allen Arena I suspect Billy will be in attendance there as he has been for so many of Chuck’s roasts and accolades, but none will be more powerful than Chuck’s cheers with the angels for all of us as we finish what God put us here to do.
May we always remember Chuck and Billy, and may all of us be given a Chuck or Billy to warm our hearts and soothe our pain.
